Hello everyone! This is T from the Main Building 4F sales floor.
Today, I’d like to introduce more than 25 different types of thimbles available at Nippon Chuko.
We’ll also talk about how to choose the right thimble for you and how to use it, so please read on!

I remember that a thimble was included in the sewing kit we used in home economics class when I was a student, but I honestly don’t remember using it very much.
I used to think, “What is this…? How do you use it?” or even, “Why is this included?”
However, after looking into it, I discovered that there are many different types of thimbles—and that they are actually much more interesting and versatile than I had imagined!

What Is a Thimble?

本皮 カラーシンブル 6個入

A thimble is a sewing and quilting tool used to protect your fingertip from the needle and to help push the needle through fabric.

A thimble is worn on the middle finger of the hand that holds the needle. When you use a thimble, the needle won’t hurt your finger even if it presses against it.

It is especially helpful when you need to sew through thick or stiff fabric. With a thimble, you can push the needle more easily without feeling pain.

LH ローヤルシンブル S/M/L

When your finger hurts, you may hesitate to keep sewing, and this can even affect your work.

By wearing a thimble, you can avoid this kind of discomfort and enjoy patchwork and other handcraft projects more comfortably♪

Is There a Difference Between a “Thimble” and a “Yubinuki”?

Both a “thimble” and a “yubinuki” are used to protect your finger from the needle. However, they differ in shape and in the part of the finger where they are worn.

A thimble covers the fingertip and is worn on the middle finger of the hand that holds the needle.
You push the head of the needle with the tip of your middle finger as you sew.
It is often used for quilting and patchwork projects.

A yubinuki is shaped like a ring. It is worn around the second joint of the middle finger.
You push the head of the needle with the back (outer side) of the ring to help move the needle through the fabric.
It is commonly used in traditional Japanese sewing and when stitching pieces of fabric together.

*Although thimbles and yubinuki are technically different items, in this article we use the term “thimble” to refer to both, for the sake of simplicity and readability.

The Origin of the Word “Thimble”

The word “thimble” comes from “thumb-bell.”

Originally, it was shaped like a small bell and was worn on the thumb.

In the 16th century, silver thimbles began to be mass-produced. Around that time, thimbles were made not only for practical use but also for decoration and collection. Even today, you can find highly functional thimbles designed for sewing, as well as decorative thimbles with cute embroidery or ones sold as travel souvenirs.

Types of Thimbles

Classified by Shape

Thimbles can be broadly divided into two main shapes.

① Ring Type

金属リング型指ぬき

The ring type is recommended when sewing small, fine stitches with a short needle.

This type fits snugly around the finger joint. After sewing a few stitches, you use the ring thimble to push the needle forward.

Ring-type thimbles are generally considered easy to handle, and many people find them simple and comfortable to use. They are especially recommended for traditional Japanese sewing, where short needles are mainly used.

皿付きタイプの指ぬき

There is also a ring type with a metal plate (dish) attached.
This type is recommended when using a long needle.

It is worn at the base of the middle finger, with the plate positioned on the palm side of the hand.

Unlike the basic ring type mentioned earlier, the plate type allows you to push the needle using your palm. This makes it easier to push the needle through the fabric without using too much finger strength.

It is recommended for sashiko, kogin embroidery, attaching buttons, and sewing thick fabrics.

Some people may wear nail art or grow their nails long to keep them looking beautiful. Since the ring-type thimble does not cover the fingertip, you can wear it without damaging your nails♪

② Cap Type

キャップ型皮製のシンブル

When working with thick or bulky fabrics such as quilts, a cap-type thimble is recommended.

This type is worn on the middle finger of your dominant hand.
One of its main advantages is that even when you push the needle one stitch at a time, your finger is less likely to feel pain.

Since this type covers the fingertip, it may not be suitable for people with long nails.
It can also take some time to get used to the feeling of wearing it. However, once you find a thimble that fits your finger perfectly, it will definitely help you sew more smoothly and efficiently!

Classified by Material

Rubber

CL57-391~393 カラフルラバーシンブル

If you are looking for a non-slip thimble, a rubber thimble is a great choice.
One of its main features is that it grips the needle firmly, making it easier to pull the needle through the fabric.

Because it is thin and fits closely to your finger, it feels comfortable. However, needles can pass through rubber more easily, so you need to be careful when pushing the needle from behind.

In that case, it is better to choose a thimble with a metal or plastic tip instead of one made entirely of rubber.

Metal

CL34-420~424 金属製シンブル 縁付

Metal thimbles are strong and durable, making them suitable for long-term use.
Even when you push the needle with strong force, there is no need to worry about the needle going through the thimble. They also help reduce finger pain when applying pressure.

Since the material is hard, it may feel a little difficult to use at first. However, as you continue using it, you will gradually get used to it and learn how to handle it comfortably.

Leather

革製のシンブル

If you want something sturdy but less painful when pushing the needle, a leather thimble is another good option after metal.
Leather is flexible and softens over time. As you keep using it, it becomes more comfortable and fits your finger better.

Some people may feel tightness or pressure when using a hard metal thimble.
Compared to metal, leather thimbles are less likely to feel restrictive.
If you have not been fully satisfied with other types, you may want to give leather a try.

Ceramic

If you prefer a thimble with an attractive appearance or unique design, a ceramic thimble is recommended.
Ceramic thimbles are actually quite durable, and their smooth surface allows the fabric to slide easily, helping you sew more smoothly.

Because of their beautiful designs, some people even collect ceramic thimbles for display rather than using them for sewing.

Three Important Points to Check When Choosing a Thimble!

Since a thimble is worn directly on your finger, choosing the right one is very important.
Here are three key points you should check when selecting a thimble.

① Make Sure the Shape of the Thimble Fits Your Finger

When choosing a thimble, be sure to check whether it matches the shape and size of your finger
If it is too large, it may slip off easily. If it is too small, it may feel tight and uncomfortable.
For thimbles that are worn between the finger joints, choose one that still fits well even when your finger is bent.

In most cases, the product packaging includes size information such as the inside diameter, so be sure to check it before purchasing.

When purchasing a thimble, try measuring the thickness of your finger and choose a size that fits you well.
If you cannot find one that fits your finger perfectly, choosing a free-size (adjustable) type is also a good option.

② Check the Material

Choose the material that suits you best based on its features and your sewing needs♪

RubberMetalLeatherCeramic

・You want to protect your finger

・You have a metal allergy, or metal feels too hard and does not fit your finger well
・You want something stylish with an attractive design
For Those with Metal Allergies or Who Find Metal Thimbles Uncomfortable…

If you have a metal allergy or feel pain when using a metal thimble, we recommend a rubber thimble or a leather thimble.

③ Always Check the Comfort and Fit

When you actually try using a thimble, it may not feel the way you expected, or it may feel uncomfortable.
In that case, try using a different thimble.

Even if two thimbles are the same size, the fit and comfort can vary greatly depending on the material.
If your finger does not move as smoothly as you expected, or if you cannot apply enough pressure when pushing the needle, the thimble you are using may not be the right one for you.
If that happens, choose a different thimble.

Store Staff Picks! Recommended Thimbles and How to Use Them

Recommended Thimbles for Patchwork

When Inserting the Needle — Leather Thimble

CL56-821~823 3Dシンブル
CL56-821~823

A thimble that will definitely be useful when inserting the needle is a leather thimble.
It easily conforms to the skin and allows you to push the needle firmly into the fabric, making it a must-have item for quilting.

It is often recommended to choose a leather thimble that feels slightly tight at first and allow it to gradually conform to your finger as you continue using it♪

When Pulling the Needle Out — Rubber Thimble

LH432806-1~3

A rubber thimble, which is non-slip and allows you to grip the needle firmly, is recommended for the finger used when pulling the needle out.

Also, when using a thimble that is slightly large, some people wear a thin rubber thimble on the finger first and then wear another thimble made of materials such as ceramic on top.

When Receiving the Needle — Metal Thimble with Rim

CL34-420~424

When catching the needle after inserting it through the fabric, it is recommended to wear a thimble on that finger as well.

Metal thimbles are said to be the second most durable after ceramic ones.
A rimmed metal thimble allows you to securely catch the needle tip so that it does not slip away.

CL56-846・847

We also carry thimbles made with both soft rubber and metal materials.
These are recommended for people who find it difficult to get a metal thimble that fits their finger perfectly.

One of the main reasons for using multiple thimbles is to protect your fingers.
When working on a project, you may become so focused that the needle tip touches your finger when inserting, pulling out, or catching the needle.
If the needle accidentally hits your finger, it can cause injury and delay your work.
To reduce such risks, make good use of thimbles during your sewing projects♪

For Patchwork Beginners, Try Using a Rubber Thimble First!!

Because of its thin material and other characteristics, many people feel that a rubber thimble provides a sensation close to using their bare fingers when inserting and pulling out the needle.
Compared with leather or metal thimbles, it may be slightly less durable. However, for those who have never used a thimble before, it may allow you to work on your projects without feeling much discomfort or stress from wearing one.
