Just Cut and Go! Make Your Own Linen Stole

Do you think “scarves are something you buy”?

Actually, this one is made by simply cutting and pulling out the threads.

And linen has so many great features:

This time, we’ll show you a super simple way to make one, along with the tools we found useful.

What You’ll Need

• Sun-dried linen stole Width approx. 36cm 1m unit (m)
• Scissors
• Awl
• Pattern weight (This will make the work much easier!)

How to Make It

① Cut the Fabric

Simply cut the fabric to approx. 36 cm wide × 180–200 cm long♪

The Sun-dried linen stole we used this time is about 36 cm wide, so you can make one just by buying 2 meters of fabric♪

A wide range of colors is available!

② Trim the Edges

Trim the uneven edges of the fabric shown below with scissors to make them even.

Here’s what it looks like after trimming.

For this step, we used the CL36-666 Cutting Work Scissors 115.

The fine, narrow blades make it easy to cut small areas and are really handy for trimming fabric edges!

These scissors were also very popular at the linen stole workshop we held at our store recently!

③ Cut the Fabric Selvage

To make the fringe, first cut off the selvage along the edge of the fabric.
The width you cut here will be the length of the fringe.

Here is the selvage along the edge of the fabric.

Decide on the fringe length and cut off the selvage.

Here is what it looks like after cutting the selvage. Cut the other side in the same way.

If you cut it too long at first, it can be difficult to adjust.
We recommend starting a little shorter and gradually making it longer as needed.

If you think, “Maybe a little longer fringe would look cuter?” don’t worry. You can adjust the length later.

④ Make the Fringe

Now it’s time to make the stole fringe!
But all you need to do here is pull out the horizontal threads little by little.

That’s it! It’s simple, but this one step brings the stole much closer to completion.

As shown in the photo above, simply pull out the threads along the edge.

The NI-78410–13 Color Sewing Paperweight is also very useful here.
It weighs about 320 g and holds the fabric firmly in place.
The colorful and cute design is also a little staff favorite—it makes the work more fun just by looking at it!

★Why Is a Paperweight Useful?
When you pull out the horizontal threads, the fabric can move and make it harder to keep your hands steady.
But simply holding the fabric down with a paperweight helps keep your hands steady and gives you a cleaner finish!

First, start by pulling out the horizontal threads one by one from the edge of the fabric.
After pulling out a few threads, use an awl to loosen the threads in the fabric.
Then, pull out the horizontal threads again.
Repeat this process until you reach the part where you cut the selvage in Step ③.

⑤ Pre-Wash the stole (Required)

Once you finish the steps above, pre-wash the stole by soaking it in water and hanging it up to dry.

Because of the nature of linen fibers, newly purchased linen often has loose threads and extra fibers.
If you use it as it is, they may affect the look and feel of the fabric.

By pre-washing the stole at the end of the process, you can remove extra fibers and make the fabric softer, bringing out the natural texture of the linen.

This is an important step for a better finish, so don’t forget to do it!

⑦ Finished♪

Once the pre-washed stole is dry, it’s finished!

Just add it to your usual outfit for an easy, stylish look.

It’s simple but useful for sun protection, keeping cool in air-conditioned rooms, or adding a little accent to your outfit.
