Sashiko has become extremely popular not only in Japan but also overseas. You may have even seen products labeled “SASHIKO” being sold internationally.
We’re often asked by customers visiting from abroad, “Where is the sashiko section?”
And now, we’re excited to introduce a new item that’s perfect for all sashiko lovers.

A Handkerchief You Can Actually Use—Even After You Finish Stitching
Sashiko is fun, but turning your finished piece into a usable item can feel like a lot of work…
Many people may find themselves with a growing pile of completed projects still waiting to be made up 🙃
This newly released gauze handkerchief comes pre-sewn in a 25 × 25 cm size!
Once you finish stitching, you can use it right away as an actual handkerchief.

What Makes It Special? Recommended Features of the Gauze Handkerchief
From here, we’ll introduce each of the features that make this gauze handkerchief so highly recommended!
Point 1: Triple-Gauze Construction
Among commonly available options, double-gauze handkerchiefs—with two layers of fabric—are the most frequently seen.
Double gauze can certainly be used for sashiko, but the fabric is slightly thin. When the fabric is thin, patterns may become distorted, or the thread tension may pull the fabric and create gaps.
This new handkerchief, however, is made with triple gauze, not double gauze ✨
The sturdier fabric makes it easier to stitch sashiko, while also providing excellent absorbency and quick-drying performance—making it practical for everyday use as a handkerchief.
Point 2: Smooth Stitching Experience
The fabric of this handkerchief is extremely soft, allowing the needle to pass through smoothly during sashiko.
You can enjoy a gentle, stress-free stitching experience. (A light starch finish may remain at first, so please wash once before use.)
Point 3: Pre-Sewn and Ready to Use
As mentioned above, this item is already fully finished. Once you complete your stitching, it can be used immediately as a handkerchief.
In addition, the edges are pre-finished, so there is no need to worry about fraying while you stitch 👌

Can Also Be Used as an Everyday Handkerchief
This handkerchief is ideal for sashiko, but of course it can also be used as a regular gauze handkerchief 🙌
It is also a practical item widely used in medical and caregiving settings.
The triple-layer construction creates an air layer between the fabrics, giving it a slightly softer and fluffier feel compared to double gauze.

How Does It Look When You Stitch It?
We tried stitching sashiko on this handkerchief.
Depending on the pattern, you may notice the threads carried across the back of the piece.
In that case, some finishing is required, but you can layer two handkerchiefs together and finish the edges to create a six-layer gauze handkerchief for use (^^♪

By the way, the pattern used for this sample is available for free! At the end of this blog, you’ll find a link to an article where you can download the pattern—be sure to check it out.
It’s an original design by Staff Y, so we hope you’ll download it and give it a try ♬
Bonus: A Handy Tool for Drawing Your Own Sashiko
Patterns!
Many manufacturers offer cloths and kits with pre-printed designs, making sashiko easy to start.
However, if you want to stitch patterns from books or use free designs, drawing the pattern yourself can be quite a challenge 💦
Here’s a very convenient item that makes marking your patterns much easier 💛
1.Sashiko Template
This sashiko template has been extremely popular since its release!
It features evenly spaced holes that allow you to mark dots with a chalk pen, making it easy to create guidelines for connecting lines on your fabric.
Available in both square grid and diagonal grid types.
Dot spacing ranges from 3 mm to 10 mm. The 5 mm and 6 mm options are especially popular 😎
An ultra-fine marking pen works best for marking the dots.
This template was also used for the original sample design shown above.

2. Moon veil
This is an extremely useful item for transferring sashiko patterns!
Place this sheet directly over the design.
The pattern shows through, so trace it with the dedicated pen.
Place the traced Moon Veil sheet on the fabric, then trace over the design again with the pen.
This process transfers the pattern onto the fabric with ease! For detailed instructions, please visit our Instagram, where we share how to use it.
